Aurelija Šimkutė was born in a western Lithuanian town named Plungė, on October 1, 1984. She studied jewelry and blacksmith, later – jewelry design. After some time working whith jewelry, Aurelija moved to a larger scale sculptural forms. Because of self – studying in sculpture she purified distinctive style, easily recognizable among other metal art authors in Lithuania. Her works are quite small size, made in precision, often has a smooth, matt and silver – plated surfaces. Sculptures often have an opening, moving parts. Aurelija do not make sketches, she makes works right out of the wax, in this reason her previous works – are unique, later works are limited edition.
A. Šimkutė makes creatures with allusion to human. These creatures often have their own worlds – oases: they are standing, lying, sitting, kneeling on an island or on a globe. Those worlds are surrounded by the local flora – distinctive forms of trees and plants. The nature she is created – is always vital and growing up.
Aurelija sees how people communicate with each other: in her works she shows these bonds between people in social environment. In one of works you can feel loneliness, longing, and sadness, the others – creatures are on the contrary: resolute, optimistic and strongly walking on to the changes, with hope and joy.
